Hi all, welcome to The Cozy Company! I'm Jill, the maker and owner behind this growing small business. What started as a COVID 19 hobby has blossomed into a successful small business. I was born and raised in New Hampshire where I currently reside with my husband, two sons and our dog! I have a passion for creating the ultimate cozy experience with chunky knits and I hope you love my product as much as I do!

I rarely post any “behind the scenes” content of my business because quite frankly, it’s just not that aesthetic. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am a mom of two very young children and live in a relatively small house. I don’t have an extra bedroom to create an office space so I have to use what I have, and for me and my family, that’s my laundry room.

I say this all in hopes that someone just starting out realizes they don’t need big fancy things to be successful. If you devote your time to making quality items, give great customer services, study the trends of the market and how to engage with your audience, anyone can do it! 🫶🏻

I remember one market, I poured myself into some new pieces and was so excited to showcase them, thinking they would sell in an instant just for them to sit there the entire market until my father in law purchased one because he felt bad.

It was crushing.

But, months later, I attended another market and I completely sold out!

ALL markets are different. The customers are different, the weather can be different, the vibes, all of it. Just because you did poorly at one, does not mean that you will do poorly in all to come, so don’t give up!

One of my most asked questions in workshops is “oh no, I missed a a loop! Do I need to start over?”

While I always recommend taking out your work until you get back to the missed loop in order to keep the blankets pattern, shape and overall structure, especially for washing, you really don’t HAVE to take out your work.

To “fix” the missed loop, simply cut the loop at its peak and take on end, wrap it around the back of the loop above, and double/ triple knit.

Please be aware that if you do end up using this method, I highly recommend spot cleaning only! (As oppose to washing in the dryer).

One of my most common questions is what are the dimensions of your blankets. While they are listed on product info on The Cozy Company website, here is a breakdown of sizing we offer…

SMALL- Size small measures roughly 30x50”. This is a great size for one person to lounge with on the couch, a “lap blanket” if you will.

MEDIUM- size medium measures roughly 50x60”. This is standard throw size and is great to completely wrap your self up in or share with two people on the couch. This is our most popular size.

LARGE- Size large measures 60x80”, which is the measurement of a queen mattress. This is the size of the blanket seen in the video.

As always, we accept custom sizing as well!

Sick of seeing a knot in your blanket when you attach a new skein? Try of the these methods instead to achieve a more uniform, clean, aesthetically pleasing look.

1. Cutting method. This is The Cozy Company’s preferred method. To achieve the cutting method, cut up your yarn on all sides about two inches up. Cutting the fluff of the yarn, down to the core. Do this on your blanket yarn and your new skein so you end up with two “rat tails”. Then, tie the two together using a square knot. Double or triple knot, and cut off tails.

2. Burning method. This is The Cozy Company’s preferred method when making a patterned blanket. To achieve this method, light your new skein end on fire with a lighter, once burning, light your end of your blanket yarn. Press the two together and hold for 30 seconds. Please note that this method may not work on all yarns. Most jumbo chenille yarns are made out of 100% polyester or a polyester blend that helps the yarn melt and fuse together when lit on fire, results may vary with other types of yarn. Be careful not to burn yourself!!

Other methods that you could use to attach two skeins is to sew the two ends together or to weave your end into your blanket.

Today’s market was a huge success!

I don’t typically do craft fairs (I limit it to around just 3 a season due to the volume of workshops I host) but I always forget how fun they are!
It amazes me to see peoples craft and how passionate they are in it, to check out everyone’s booth space and talk to all sorts of new people. I always am about to come back to my business with a little more knowledge and new things to try!

Not going to lie, starting chunky knit blanket workshops back in 2021 was a very scary move for me! I have never enjoyed public speaking. I was that girl in high school whose face would get all red and blotchy whenever she had to public speak.

As I became a mom and a small business owner, I gained more confidence in myself and my public speaking skills. And let me tell you, I am SO glad I pushed through my fears and just went for it! Since then, workshops have really been a huge factor in my business success and I’ve been able to host both public and private workshops ranging from 8 to 50 people at a time (thanks @taaynobert for always helping me with the big ones! 🫶🏻) ,

No, I don’t.

Many people may think it is insane until they see the process and time it takes to make each blanket. Especially when each blanket is hand knit and made with love.

Running The Cozy Company, I try to make my prices affordable but also worth my time, expertise, and energy. And sometimes, to non-business owners, it is not fully understood what goes into the cost of goods and services.

So let’s break it down. How do you fairly price your handmade item?

(Supplies) + (time) = Item cost
• The “item cost” is how much your items costs you to make. Yes, it is not just supplies that make up your item cost! Your time is valuable too, so work out your hourly rate and be sure to stick to it when you are working out your pricing.

(Item cost) x (markup) = wholesale cost
• The “wholesale cost” is how much a shop would buy your products with the intent/ goal to resell them. There is usually an established minimum quantity or price associated with wholesale orders. The markup is usually around 2-2.5 but ultimately, it is your choice.

(Wholesale cost) x (markup)= retail cost
• Your “retail cost” is how much you should be selling/charging your item for.

I don’t usually feel like I have to justify my pricing but it does occasionally come up. At the end of the day, people pay for what they value, and if you value handmade items and small businesses, I see you and I appreciate you! 🫶🏻
